Examining Education: Standardized Testing

First aired at 6 pm CT Saturday, Oct. 22, on WILL-AM 580

What should be the role of standardized testing in our schools? Is its current direction problematic?

As part of its Race to the Top competition, the US Department of Education last September awarded $330 million to two coalitions of states to help them develop new ways of measuring whether students are on track to be ready for college and 21st -century careers, i.e. meeting the newly developed Common Core State Standards. As one newspaper headline declared last fall, “Race to the Top promises new era of standardized testing.”

Our three guests for this program include Andy Porter, dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, Laura Slover, senior vice-president of Achieve, and Monty Neill, executive director of the National Center for Fair & Open Testing
