Examining Education: Technology, Part 1 – aired on Saturday, October 29, 2011

Digitized text books? Students using smartphone for learning in the classroom? Wireless broadband access for all schools?

Next time on Examining Education, we discuss technology: What is its place? What challenges can it address? And what new dimensions can it introduce?

Last fall Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, released the final version of the National Technology Plan, Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology. In introducing the plan he told his audience that “We’re at an important transition point. We’re getting ready to move from a predominantly print-based classroom to a digital learning environment.”

Our three guests for our first program on Technology in Education will talk about the possibilities it offers. Our guests include Evangeline Pianfetti, educational psychology faculty and former assistant dean of learning technology, University of Illinois College of Education; Elliot Soloway, education and engineering professor, University of Michigan; S. Craig Watkins, professor of media studies, departments of radio-television-film and sociology, and the Center for African and African-American Studies, University of Texas-Austin.
